Big Walk Player Count Guide

Choose the right Big Walk world size for two, four or twelve players, with role templates, puzzle pacing, inventory advice and join-in-progress tips.

A Big Walk group spread across the island
Pick the world size for the group you expect, then agree how far teams may split.

Big Walk supports 2–12 online players, but the best session size depends on how much wandering, backtracking and voice coordination your group enjoys. The host chooses a world version for 2, 3 or 4+ players before the walk begins.

What is the Big Walk max player count?

The maximum player count is 12, and the minimum is 2. There is no single-player mode; the solo guide explains what happens if you start a session alone.

Quick recommendation

GroupChoose it whenStrengthWatch for
2 playersYou want every clue to be a conversationClear decisions and no one gets lost in a crowdCarrying tools and backtracking can feel slow
3–4 playersYou want the most flexible first runEnough hands for a puzzle, a runner and a navigatorAgree who owns the current objective
5–8 playersYou enjoy splitting into pairsOne team can scout while another solvesRadio discipline becomes important
9–12 playersThe group prefers social chaos and parallel explorationMultiple regions can be searched at oncePeople can be left out of a puzzle or miss the explanation

Community discussions describe four players as a comfortable baseline, while larger groups work best when every team has a named region and a return landmark. There is no single “correct” size.

World size is a session decision

The 2 / 3 / 4+ choice tells the game what kind of world session to create. There is no fixed ideal size — the official FAQ says every supported group size can work, with smaller groups more focused and a group closer to twelve more chaotic. Treat the selected 2 / 3 / 4+ world as the minimum number you expect to participate: if some friends cannot stay for the whole session, the FAQ suggests selecting a lower number. If your regular group changes, start a new session with the appropriate setting rather than assuming the world will rebalance — existing save progress is not lost.

Before launching:

  1. Count the players who are likely to join in the first hour.
  2. Pick the closest world size rather than planning around a temporary guest.
  3. Tell late joiners the host's landmark and the current objective.
  4. If the session repeatedly rejects a returning player, use the troubleshooting hub and try a full host restart.

Role templates by size

Two players

Use one navigator/runner and one puzzle lead/radio operator. Swap after each tower so one player is not carrying every key. Leave spare tools at the puzzle board before taking the long route home.

Three to four players

Assign a navigator, puzzle lead, runner and radio operator. This is the simplest group for the screen-count puzzle: each person can own a view without turning the room into a chorus of guesses.

Five to twelve players

Split by tower or map region. Give each team a colour, one radio channel and one return coordinate. A pair solves; a pair scouts; everyone else carries or watches the route. Regroup after a major unlock so nobody misses the new fast-travel option.

The communication tools guide has a short vocabulary for “ready”, “hold”, “bring it back” and “meet here”.

Joining during a run

Players can join an in-progress session through the host's Join Code or platform friends list, but the arrival point may not be the place the group expects. Use this sequence:

  1. Host pauses at a named landmark.
  2. New player joins and confirms they can see the same world state.
  3. Host shares a coordinate and sends a flare or radio call.
  4. Give the newcomer one navigation item before splitting again.

If a guest cannot rejoin after a crash, close the host's game completely and recreate the code. See Known Issues for the documented community workaround.
