Multiplayer FAQ

Can You Play Big Walk Solo?

You cannot complete Big Walk solo: there is no single-player mode and puzzles require at least two people. See what works alone and how to find a group.

No — you cannot properly play or complete Big Walk solo. There is no single-player mode, and the game is designed for 2–12 online players. You can start a session alone and walk around a little, but the official FAQ says you will not get very far.

That is a design requirement rather than a difficulty recommendation. Many puzzles divide information or controls between different locations, so one character cannot perform both roles.

Does Big Walk have single-player mode?

No. Big Walk does not offer a separate solo campaign, AI companions or a setting that converts co-op puzzles for one person. The smallest supported group is two players.

Solo questionAnswer

Are there AI teammates?No
Is there public matchmaking?No
Minimum group size2 players
Maximum group size12 players

The clearest example is the 4166, 1899 coordinate puzzle: one player presses a hidden remote button while another waits by the box. Other challenges separate clues, switches or communication roles in similar ways.

What can you do alone?

The official FAQ says you can enter the game alone and wander around, but you will not get very far — there is no AI companion or setting that converts the puzzles for one person. That freedom is still useful: you can learn the controls, handle objects, try the gestures and inspect the starting space before friends arrive, or check the graphics before committing.

Built-in text chat follows the same proximity rules as voice, which means a microphone is not mandatory for a group to communicate. Same-platform friends can use their platform friend list where supported, and mixed-platform friends can enter a short per-session Join Code.

The host owns the save, so choose the person most likely to attend future sessions as host. When that player starts again, friends can rejoin through a platform friends list or a new Join Code. Starting “solo for now” does not move the save's ownership to a friend later — the host must be present to continue, and leaving disconnects the other player.

Can one person use two controllers?

Big Walk has no local co-op or split-screen mode. Each character joins online from a separate device and copy of the game. Even if a second controller is connected, the game does not turn one screen into a two-player session.

The communication system is part of the design: voices change with distance, walls and walkie-talkies. That is also why the official FAQ recommends playing in separate rooms instead of bypassing the in-game audio.

Does Big Walk have matchmaking?

No public matchmaking is built into the game. You invite platform friends or share a Join Code with people you have organized outside the game. If nobody in your existing group owns it, use the find-players guide before buying and avoid posting active Join Codes permanently.

Crossplay makes assembling a group easier. A two-player session can mix Steam, PS5, Mac App Store and Nintendo Switch 2 as long as both players are running compatible versions.

Is Big Walk good with two players?

Yes. The host chooses a two-player version of the world, and the game adapts parts of the island for that group size. Two players produce a more focused experience than a crowded session, although carrying tools and backtracking can take longer.

The player-count guide compares two, three, four and larger groups. For joining, saving, crossplay and local co-op answers, see the complete multiplayer guide.
